Thanks to EVDO and just enough battery power left in my laptop, I'm posting this from the train after attending tonight's New York Video 2.0 Meetup. I've known Scott Heiferman for a while, but this is the first actual Meetup I've attended, and it was a great event - a testament to the power of the community he's enabled.
NY Video 2.0 is focused on all things online video-related, and is led by Yaron Samid of Pando, and only 6 months ago had only 30 members. Today there are almost 500 members and around 200 showed up tonight. More info can be found here.
DotSub.com presented their user powerd video translated video project, and David Dundas of YouAre.tv showed their online independent video platform. NBBC showed their content owner/publisher/advertiser platform, and said they delivered over 1 million streams last quarter, and are aiming for 1 billion this year - and said their 7-, 15- and 30-second spots are averaging over a $25 CPM. Jeff Pulver was entertaining as usual and talked about his Network2 project and his upcoming VON conference.
Aaron Cohen, founder of Bolt (and also part of a stealth First Round Capital-funded startup), wrapped up the evening with a really engaging discussion of what he's learned over the years. Bolt has been around for 10 years, and he's watched both MySpace and YouTube emerge around him. He calls sites like MySpace and eBay "planets" with both big reach and pageviews/session, and the crop of high reach-only "moons" that orbit them, and observed that YouTube started as a moon and evolved into a planet. We also learned during Aaron's talk that Joost is pronounced "YOst" - so say it like you're from Philly if you want to sound like you're in the know.
I'd highly recommend checking out an upcoming Meetup near you, and this one in particular if you're in New York and interested in video.
